| Either enslaved by the will of the Combine or scrimping in the outlying areas, Vortigaunts are an endangered species. |
Vortigaunts are a resident species of the border world Xen, where they acted as hunter/gatherers at the top of the ecosystem. Being a very social and intelligent species, they use their connections to an unknown force known as the Vortessence to survive. During the events of the Black Mesa industrial incident, they were released into Earth during the various portal storms that appeared in their world. With the arrival of the Combine and the Seven Hour War finally ending, many Vortigaunts were captured and enslaved if they were not outright killed. Rumors began circulating under the leadership of Martreen that the Vortigaunt threat would return again, and not too soon after, they were proven correct.
Vortigaunt slaves / Biotics
Vortigaunt Slaves, otherwise known as Biotics, are the enslaved counterpart to their freed kin. They are significantly more numerous, commonplace in cities and are otherwise fairly timid. The shackles placed on them serve as dual-purpose for both preventing escape via a remote controlled shock collar, and for harnessing the Vortessent energy from a shackled Vortigaunt in order to power itself. It is incredibly difficult to remove these harnesses without causing them to trigger, and it is likely that most enslaved Vortigaunts will never see a day where they are reconnected once more.
Rules
These rules must be followed by anyone playing on an Enslaved Vortigaunt.
0. Use common sense. Do not roleplay in a way that is obviously unfitting of a Vortigaunt.
1. You are prohibited from going against direct orders set by Overwatch Forces. This will result in your character being permanently killed as a possible removal of the whitelist.
2. Do not go out of your way to cause trouble or chaos for no reason.
3. It is within your best interest to remain in-character at all times and your roleplay should reflect that of being constantly watched as an endangered species.
Compliance
Vortigaunt Slaves must remember these fundamentals:
- Your bonds render you disconnected from the Vortessence and the Vortigaunt consciousness. You are alone and severed from your vital teachers, scholars and kin - the only ones who are with you share your same misery.
- You are in a perpetual state of danger and servitude. Do your best to preserve yourself whenever applicable.
- Your people have been enslaved for eons and understand that it is better to obey than make themselves a target. Petty acts of disobedience only serve to get you killed and harm your kin around you.
Duties
The Combine have enslaved you and branded you a mere tool. You alone cannot escape, so it is best to learn quick what duties you serve. Vortigaunt Slaves act as simple janitors, and work to keep the city clean. Disposing of trash, sweeping floors and streets, and disposing or moving bodies from open view are some of the basic duties a Vortigaunt Slave can have. Additionally, they may be tasked to perform other duties by Civil Protection or attend workshifts. They are permitted to be outside during curfew so long as they behave.
